W. A. McDowell General Manager
of the L.& E.
Also made Chief Engineer and a member of the Directors' board to succeed Barr
HAS BEEN WITH BOARD FOR SEVERAL YEARS
Is Recommended as Member of Board of Directors of Union Station Co.
At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Lexington & Eastern Railway Company yesterday morning W. A. McDowell was elected a member of the Board to fill the vacancy created by the death of J. R. Barr, and was also elected General Manager and Chief Engineer to fill the position which Mr. Barr held on the road.
With L. & E. since 1897.
Mr. McDowell has been connected with the Lexington & Eastern since the fall of 1897, having gone to that road from the Louisville & Nashville to take the position of Assistant Engineer and Purchasing Agent of the Lexington & Eastern. He was next to Mr. Barr in the active management of the road and for the past 6 months since Mr. Barr was taken sick has discharged his own duties and the duties of General Manager and Chief Engineer. He is, therefore, thoroughly familiar with the duties of the position, acquainted with the needs of the road. His selection by the Board of Directors to fill the vacancy created by Mr. Barr's death will meet the approval of every one who has business with the Lexington & Eastern, and is particularly gratifying to the employee of the road as it establishes the principle of promotion where the nest in line for the position has proven his worth and competency to fill that position.
Son of H. C. McDowell
Mr. McDowell is the son of Maj. H. C,. McDowell, who was the president of the Lexington & Eastern after it was taken out of the receiver's hands, and who laid the foundation for the great success the road has attained under the presidency of Mr. Carey, who succeeded him, and under the management of Mr. Barr, whom Major McDowell selected as General Manager. Mr. McDowell is a graduate of Yale, having taken his degree in the Sheffield Scientific School in 1885. After graduation he engaged in commercial pursuits and went to Big Stone Gap when that place looked as if it were one of the coming cities of the Southwest. After the panic of '92 and '93 had smashed the Big Stone Gap boom, Mr. McDowell went with the L. and N. railroad and from it to the Lexington & Eastern. In the discharge of his duties in the Lexington & Eastern he has won for himself the warm friendship and high respect of those under him and those over him in the employ of the road, as well as of all the patrons of the road.
May be Union Station Director.
The Board of
Directors also recommended Mr. McDowell as a member of the Board of Directors of
the Union Station Company of which Mr. Barr was a member, representing the
Lexington & Eastern on that Board. The Directors of the Union Station
Company are selected by the three roads entering the Union Station, Mr. Mitchell
representing the Chesapeake & Ohio; Mr. Evans, Fourth Vice President, the
Louisville & Nashville, and Mr. Barr, of the Lexington & Eastern.
