General Napoleon Bonaparte Buford
was born January 13 1807 and was the son of John Buford and his first wife Mary Hickman.  They lived in Woodford County, Kentucky until moving to Rock Island Illinois.
He was chosen to attend West Point Military Academy from July 1, 1823 until graduating as brevet 2nd Lieutenant in 1827.
He studied Law at Harvard after graduating from West Point with the permission of the War Department.

Below you will find the letters written to the War Department requesting admission into West Point.
