CAPT. MARCUS BUFORD DIES IN PARIS, FRANCE
Former Midway Man and United States Naval Officer
Passes at Age of 70 Years
Midway, Kentucky, December 8 - A cablegram received at Midway last evening announced the death of Captain Marcus Bainbridge Buford at Paris, France on Sunday last.
Captain Buford was born at Elkwood, near Midway, Woodford County, KY., July 10, 1844. He was a son of William McDowell (Scott Billie) and Margaret Robertson Buford.
He entered the United States Naval Academy at Newport, Rhode Island, in 1861 and was graduated from Annapolis in 1865; was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1881, but resigned in 1888. He re-entered the service in the Spanish war and was commander of the U.S. steamer Abarenda, and later captain of the U. S. transports Grant and Thomas, sailing between San Francisco and Manila. In 1900 he retired, and until his death made his residence in Paris, France. In 1870 he married Miss Mary Jordon Reed Hunter, of Erie, PA. Mrs. Buford died in France in 1910.
Captain Buford is survived by a brother, William R. Buford, of Chattanooga, Tennessee and three sisters, Mrs. M. P. Craig of Corpus Christi, Texas; Mrs. Kate B. Poynter of Midway, KY. and Mrs. Mary Duke Miller of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The body of Captain Buford will be
brought from Paris to Erie, PA where it will be interred in the Hunter lot in
the cemetery of that place.
