John Lewis Cofer, 100, of Montvale, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2006. He was born September 12, 1905 in Bedford Co., Va. to the late Berry and Emma Leftwich Cofer. Mr. Cofer was an employee of the United States Government working as a cook at the White House serving during the Eisenhower Administration. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha R. Cofer; daughter, Marie L. Buford and granddaughter Tanya R. Sands. Those left to cherish his memory are daughter, Maxine Rayford, Washington DC; three grandchildren Elise Carroll, James Rayford Jr. both of Washington DC and James L. Buford, Montvale; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Cofer; nephew, Herbert H. Cofer both of Montvale; five nieces, Nora Walker, Washington DC, Josephine Brown, Roanoke, Mary (Ted) Curtis, Bluefield, WV, Jackie Wills, Thaxton and Kathleen (Russell) Hobson, Montvale; cousins, Catherine L. Beatty, Montvale and Annie Robertson, Orville, Ohio; devoted caretakers, great-niece, Martha Welch and James Hill Jr. A host of great-nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2006 in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel.  The interment will be in Cofer Family Cemetery, Montvale. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Friends may call on Sunday for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
